NeXt Doc Overview

NeXt Doc is a year-long fellowship that brings together emerging documentary storytellers from diverse backgrounds across the country with award-winning documentary filmmakers to learn, share, and build their skills. Throughout the year we will provide each cohort of Fellows the opportunity to build their networks and amplify their voices, while forming deep relationships and fostering community amongst the cohort. NeXt Doc is a program of Youth FX and includes film screenings, masterclasses, and workshops that explore project development, narrative structure, treatment writing, budgeting, doc history and critical explorations of power and representation in non-fiction storytelling.   NeXt Doc has become an incubator for incredible talent, supporting continued growth of emerging voices in the documentary field. Past fellows have gone on to receive funding from Enterprise Fund, iTVS, Tribeca Film Institute, intern at POV, Good Pitch, landing other fellowships including Sundance Ignite, Kartemquin Diversity in Docs, and Camden Northstar Fellowship. NeXt Doc is funded in part by JustFilms Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, The The Academy for Arts and Motion Pictures Sciences, New York State Council on the Arts, NoVo Foundation and is supported by our partner organizations, The Alliance, A-Doc, POV, Sundance Institute, International Documentary Association and our community of filmmakers.

Amplifying the Voices of Diverse Filmmakers

NeXt Doc gathers a dynamic community of emerging documentary filmmakers aged 20-24 at The Carey Institute's beautiful 100-acre campus in upstate New York and provides an inspiring five days of learning, sharing and building community.  Youth FX is committed to amplifying the voices of people of color through digital film making and storytelling. We especially encourage women and people of color to apply.

Industry Professionals + Emerging Film Makers

Documentary filmmakers wear many hats; producer, director, cinematographer and editor, not to mention often working alone and with limited resources.  From concept, budgeting, shooting and editing, to marketing and distribution, NeXt Doc provides an intensive look into the world of documentary film from the perspective of award-winning producer-directors.

Our Approach

NeXt Doc a one-of-a-kind opportunity for young diverse documentary filmmakers: a week-long residential program that is an intensive experience, designed to bolster their capacity to succeed professionally and creatively at the beginning stage of their career.

The NeXt Doc curriculum is built around four core principles:

PEER-TO-PEER KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Through scheduled screening sessions of their work and informal exchanges, NeXt Doc challenges young filmmakers to talk about their work, give and receive critical feedback, learn from each other's experiences and brainstorm new ideas. These opportunities not only help to build skills and strengthen their storytelling techniques, but also create community, and provide a foundation for future collaborations as they develop careers.

BUILDING NETWORKS

Equitable access to resources is a barrier to diversity in documentary filmmaking. Networking with others in the field and supporters of the documentary film is critical to securing resources. NeXt Doc connects young filmmakers to mentors and advisors already established in the field. These connections form the beginning of their professional network providing a foundation to build upon after NeXt Doc ends.
